From a doula perspective
That’s why this message needs to be spread and shared so women can make different choices, so they can come out from the birth experience feeling strong in themselves and with a sense they can achieve anything they want.
Women are amazing! I feel so honoured to be invited in to people’s life in this so intimate life-changing moment in their lives.
And women are so different too and so is each birth. I’m in constant awe at the mysterious nature of birth.. with wonder I reflect on why certain births happen so fast as if birth was happening to the woman and sometimes birth needs an active participation, a conscious choice, a gathering of all the energy directed at the process of birthing. If you pay attention you can clearly see how a woman works internally during pregnancy, how she process life, their personality can show certain peculiarities and may indicate how she will birth her baby.
With one client in particular I saw she made defining decisions along the way that meant she had the birth she worked for.. she even decided how long she wanted birth to be and she wasn’t far off. I’m amazed at how women do that!
And then I also sometimes witness the system failing to support them. Planting a vicious seed of doubt and fear that she is not capable of knowing what’s happening in her body, with her baby who had been inside her ALL the time! Or when you get “ I’m sorry love, our shift ended so you will have to be transferred - you are 6cm and you’ll have to go in your car because the transfer wait is between 6-8 hours”. Say goodbye to your warm home and birth pool into a cold night and into a sterile maternity room.
It’s tough and sad at times! - as a doula I work so this doesn’t become everyone’s birth story. Because I’ve seen in from of my eyes the consequence of birth trauma and its impact and I know it CAN be different and not only different but Powerful, Positive, Loving, Respectful and full of Beauty.
